Chapter 1 - Taste

The air was a bit chilly as I walked down the alley that led to my apartment. Lately, there have been rumors going around that women have been disappearing or being killed as if a vampire did it. I pulled my jacket up around my neck at the thought, even though I didn't believe in such a thing, and picked up my steady pace. Just as I rounded the corner, a man appeared in front of me. I stared at him in fear, unable to move because of his gaze. His eyes glowed like crystal blue water. "Come here," he said softly, pulling me in with his voice. I felt my head spin as I stepped closer to him. Vanilla? I thought to myself as I closed my eyes to block out the spinning.

I didn't know how I got surrounded by the numbing black again. I tried to reach for something to pull me out of the dark muck but my limbs felt heavy. I'm sorry Mom...I did it again, I thought as I finally closed my eyes and let the blackness engulf me.

I awoke with a gasp as I sat up. "Hah, it was only a bad dream," I laughed, my heart pounding to the point where it felt like it would explode through my chest. I slowly calmed myself and climbed out of my bed. I started to walk towards the bathroom when everything began to spin again. I felt myself lose my balance, but before I hit the floor, something caught me. "You should really be more careful," the voice said softly in my ear as I was picked up and carried back to my bed. I tried to protest but my body was too weak to do anything so I leaned my head against him. His skin was cool which felt good on my cheek. I also listened for a heart beat but I must have been to weak to hear it. He laid me back on the bed and covered me up. "You really shouldn't get up, you lost quite a good amount of blood," he said softly as he stayed hidden in the shadows. I tried to strain my eyes enough to see what he looked like but I failed. "How did I lose so much blood?" I asked meekly. My head was still dizzy as I gently sat up.

"You tripped in the alley and cut your wrist on a broken bottle. You're very lucky that I was there or else you would have died," he replied. I looked down at my wrist and saw it bandaged and taped, the gauze showed a bit of blood soaking through. It throbbed slightly and I winced.

"Be careful, it's still healing," he implored as I sighed heavily and covered my eyes with my other hand.

"I wonder why this stuff always happens to me," I groaned. I didn't feel the bed shift but something told me that he was sitting next to me. I moved my hand away from my eyes and stared at him. He was pale with dark hair and his eyes were a sort of ice blue. I was a little shocked to see how he looked as well as his strange features. "Are you wearing contacts?" I blurted without thinking. I felt the heat rush to my cheeks instantly. He smiled softly, then, showed off a set of perfect white teeth, which caused me to frown slightly. There's something going on...he's too perfect. I thought to myself as I placed on a fake smile. "So tell me, What's your name?"

"My name?" he asked, sort of shocked at the question. I just nodded and smiled. He sat there for a second, before taking a deep breath. "My name is Darian."

I raised an eyebrow and grinned. "You're lying," I accused, as I leaned back against the pillows. He looked at me as if he had been slapped in the face.

"Why do you say that?" He asked a bit offended.

"Well for one thing, you took a while to think about it as if you had to make up one. Second, you only said your first name not your full name." I smiled inwardly, knowing I caught his lie.

"Ok well then if that's how you want to play it, my name is Darius McConner. I'm 22 and I live just around the corner from these apartments." He smiled slyly when he finished due to the fact that my mouth gaped open. "Now that you know my name, what is yours?"

"My name is Salet Shafferon. I'm 20 and well, you know where I live," I answered, almost like a compulsion. I blushed and bit my lower lip to keep myself from telling him everything. He smiled again and got up.

"Well I should get going now. You need rest," he replied.

"Um actually, I was wondering, would you like to stay for a while? At least until I get something to eat?" I felt a blush creep to my face again as I asked the question. What are you doing?! I screamed in my head as I smiled at him.
